Breast Cyst is a non-cancerous lump which has a fluid-filled sac inside the breast. This is a normal change that happens commonly due to variation in hormone levels. It is usually seen in women aged 35 to 50 years, however can occur in women below and above this age group. They can be single or appear as multiple lumps, in one or both breasts. It often feels like a grape or a water-filled balloon or sometimes feels firm. The symptoms of breast cysts can feel soft or hard, some may feel uncomfortable and even painful. As with any breast lump, you will need to have a thorough clinical examinations and age appropriate imaging to confirm the diagnosis. Small cysts are left alone and do not require treatment or follow up. A large cyst causing discomfort maybe be aspirated under ultrasound guidance. Once aspirated, they do have a tendency to re-collect and re-appear,. You will need to consult your doctor if this happens. Breast cysts usually stop forming after menopause, however can occur if you are taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT). As they occur in response to normal variations in hormone levels, there are no preventive measures. Although common in women, men are also prone to cysts, particularly if on steroid therapy. Having a simple breast cyst does not increase your risk for cancer but any new changes within the cyst can indicate an underlying ailment and needs to be assessed. Some complex and complicated cyst may need routine follow up or surgery.
